1.9 thousand attempts to extort loans for PLN 76 million in Q2 in Poland

Using someone else’s identity, attempts were made to extort 1.9 thousand people. loans totaling PLN 76 million in Q2 2021, the Polish Bank Association (ZBP) informed in the 46th edition of the InfoDOK report.

In the second quarter of 2021, over 1.9 thousand attempts to extort loans for a total amount of PLN 76 million were blocked. Blocking cases of using someone else’s identity with the use of identity cards, passports and driving licenses is possible thanks to a very fast system of stopping stolen and lost documents in banks – in the last three months, Poles submitted as many as 37.2 thousand identity documents, according to the report.

In the last quarter, 37,190 data were added to the database of the Reserved Documents System – this is 16% more than a year ago in the same period. Statistically, 409 documents were delivered to the database daily. Currently, there are over 2.1 million such documents in the database of the interbank DZ System.

“Last year was the time of the first period of the Covid-19 pandemic. The traffic on the streets decreased significantly, and it was difficult to find crowds in public transport and on the sidewalks in which pickpockets felt the best. normality returns – thus we call for caution. And in the event that we lose our documents, please reserve them as soon as possible in the bank. This should be done not only by those who already have bank accounts, but also by those who They did not use banking services, they also can and should use the Reserved Documents System,” said the president of the Polish Bank Association, Krzysztof Pietraszkiewicz.

The total amount of 1,914 loan fraud attempts in the second quarter of 2021 was PLN 76.3 million. Two samples exceeding the amount of PLN 1 million were recorded, the largest of which concerned PLN 6 million (Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship).

The ZBP Reserved Documents system is a nationwide database of millions of stolen and lost documents. It protects against fraudulent use of someone else’s identity. Documents should be reserved by everyone – not only bank customers. This is the most important step that must be taken immediately, when we lose, for example, ID card, passport or driving license. In just a few minutes, the data goes to all banks, mobile operators and thousands of other companies using the system.
