Only 20 percent of mortgages granted since 2007 have been for units in new residential projects, according to statistics released by BRD bank. Just 15 percent of the mortgages granted were for houses, of which 30 percent were new builds, according to the report. Most mortgages (41 percent) were for units located in the western part of the country, including the Transylvania, Maramures, Banat regions, while 24 percent of the total mortgages granted in this period were in the Muntenia region, and 19 percent were in Bucharest. The average mortgage was for €51,000 over 20 years.
