200,000 Ukrainians receive Polish PESEL number

22 March 2022

Nearly 200,000 citizens of Ukraine have already received a PESEL number, said Janusz Cieszyński, Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. In his opinion, there will be around 250,000 of them by the end of the day.

“At the end of the day yesterday there were already almost 200,000. If this pace continues, and I assume that it will increase, I think that today at the end of the day it will be around a quarter of a million people,” said Cieszyński in the Polish Radio24.

When asked about the queues for assigning a PESEL number, he stressed that the government had taken into account from the beginning that the interest of Ukrainian citizens in receiving a PESEL number would be high, considering the number of people who came to Poland. He assured that this week the distribution of equipment for local governments began so that they could quickly create and launch additional points serving customers.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, 2.14 million citizens of this country have crossed the direct border with Poland.
