The introduction of fast 5G mobile networks will bring domestic industry revenues of over CZK 59 billion by 2025. The cost of introducing the technology will amount to approximately CZK 18 billion. 5G is to bring CZK 130 billion to the entire Czech economy, which is almost four times the implementation costs. This follows from a study by the global consulting and analytical company Analysys Mason.
Of the total volume of Czech industrial production in 2019, almost a quarter of production fell on the automotive industry. “The automotive sector is a major driver of 5G’s industrial applications worldwide, as car manufacturers and their components have always operated highly innovative production facilities,” said Sebastian Elmgren of Ericsson in the study.
According to him, car manufacturers commonly use equipment such as electric screwdrivers and other smart tools with built-in sensors, or robots transporting spare parts around the factory. To get the most out of their smart equipment, Elmgren says businesses need a robust wireless connection with the minimum latency that 5G provides.
Other examples of 5G industrial applications mentioned by Elmgren include augmented reality (AR) glasses, which Ericsson uses in its own smart factories to control the quality of 5G components. The device displays all the necessary information in the field of view of the technician and streamlines his work by 50 percent. In a similar way, repairs and modifications to the equipment can be simplified by eliminating the need for an engineer to go out into the field or even arrive from the other side of the world, Elmgren added.
According to the head of the Czech branch of Ericsson, Cvet Gašperut, domestic companies will launch the first 5G network this year. Ericsson recently signed a contract with the largest domestic owner of CETIN telecommunications networks for the construction of a 5G network and the modernization of existing mobile networks.
5G mobile networks enable ten times the connection speed against LTE. The frequencies in the 700 MHz band needed for 5G were auctioned off at the end of the year by existing operators last year.
