Miami’s IBT Group wins $27m Panamanian gov’t prison order

Miami-based IBT Group has won a $27.6 million tender to build a new women’s prison for the government of Panama. Located in the Panamanian district of Pacora, east of the Panama City metropolitan area, the new facility is being built to alleviate overcrowding at the sole existing women’s prison in Central American nation. Plans call for the 161,459 sqf detention center to have a school, chapel, auditorium, health clinic and maternity home, plus sports fields and facilities for making clothing. Designed for 732 inmates, IBT will be responsible for the construction and equipping of the scheme. “The design of the new center also will be inclined toward the physical and psychological well-being of inmates in compliance with the Panamanian law aimed at improving the living conditions of women prisoners,” Daniel Toledano, managing director and chief operating officer of IBT Group of Miami, said in a prepared statement
