Hungrana laid the cornerstone for its HUF 1.5bn biomass power plant in Szabadegyháza, central Hungary. The Austrian-US-owned company burns 75,000 tons of biomass a year at its existing biomass power plant, generating enough steam and thermal energy to cover two-thirds of its needs. The new plant will increase this ratio to 100 percent. Fazekas Sándor, Hungary’s agriculture minister, said that the company is planning to make a long-term commitment in the country. He added that environmental protection is also important to Hungrana, which only uses Hungarian, GMO-free raw materials to produce bioethanol for motor vehicles.
