Romanian protestors persist, demand government’s resignation

13 February 2017

Tens of thousands of Romanians gathered in central Bucharest on Sunday night to protest the refusal of the the country’s government to resign, as the backlash to its attempt to decriminalize low-level corruption continues. The country’s prime minister had hoped that by putting forward his justic minister as a scapegoat and forcing him to resign, the wave of outrage that shook the country would abate. It hasn’t as protestors claim that the only way to ensure such moves aren’t tried in the future is to force the current regime out. The crowd on Sunday night, the 13th consecutive day of protests, used light from tens of thousands of mobile telephones to create a Romanian flag. If such coordinated action continues, the future of the country’s government will look increasingly tenuous.
