The sale of US Steel in Košice, eastern Slovakia, may soon be finalized. The US owners of the steelworks signed a memorandum in Pittsburgh with Chinese investor He Steel Group. Due diligence will commence in February. The memorandum excludes other bidders, like Moravia Steel whose majority owner is the Slovak millionaire Tomáš Chrenek. He Steel won with a bid of €1.4bn, according to the server HNonline. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said in a TV statement that the government will immediately start talks about future cooperation with the new owner. US Steel employs more than 10,000 people, and the state is hoping to strengthen its influence in the company, Fico said.
