As many as 50,000 people are reported to have turned out for the latest demonstrations in Bucharest in a growing wave of unrest over the fate of Romania’s anti-corruption drive. The government revealed that it was planning to release hundreds of prisoners serving time for lesser crimes and it emerged that this could include those sentenced for corruption resulting in less than ROM 200,000. The number of protestors was a police estimate and if true would make it the largest yet. Romania’s president has placed himself on the side of the protestors in the current conflict.
