10 January 2017

M.R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava handled a total of 1,756,808 passengers in 2016, up 12.3 percent, or 192,497 travelers, y-o-y. This is the highest volume in eight years, with 2008 setting the record at 2,218,545 passengers. July was the strongest month in 2016: the airport handled 257,814 passengers, up 2 percent y-o-y. The director of the airport, Ivan Trhlík, said that the increase could have been much stronger but was limited by the terrorist threat, which discourages many people from traveling abroad. This mostly impacted irregular flights, which dropped 14 percent y-o-y to 417,021, while regular flights rocketed 24 percent to 1,335,000 passengers.
