Kaufland is the leading hypermarket chain in the Czech market with CZK 55.2bn in revenues in 2016. Research conducted by GfK Czech ranks Ahold with its Albert hypermarkets and supermarkets as second. Ahold outstripped Tesco thanks to its takeover of the Interspar and Spar hypermarket networks. Lidl improved its standing from sixth to fourth this year, with Penny Market and Makro losing ground. Czechs spent CZK 327bn in the ten strongest hypermarket chains, up by 22bn y-o-y. The market share of international chains broke the 70 percent benchmark, Zdeněk Skála of GfK Czech told Hospodářské noviny.
