ELEM to modernize REK Oslomej plant

4 October 2016

Macedonia’s public power company ELEM, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, want to modernize the coal-powered REK Oslomej plant in Kičevo, western Macedonia. Costs are estimated at €126m. ELEM said in its present state, the plant is negatively impacting the environment.

“The study examined the option to use high-quality imported coal as well as the lower-quality coal available near Oslomej. This proposal would allow the creation of a well-balanced domestic power-producing site that would work at an affordable price, independent from changes on the world markets,” ELEM said in a statement. “The lifespan of REK Oslomej would be extended for additional 30 years. It would make the plant more efficient and would reduce emissions of SOx, NOx and dust particles to meet European Union standards.”
