Prague at Expo Real: restoration of the Old Town Marketplace as well as co-exhibitors´projects

29 September 2016

At this year´s Expo Real, the capital city is to present a project for reconstruction of the formerly iconic Old Town Marketplace, which is currently among listed buildings and which suffered from insensitive reconstruction carried out in the 2nd half of the 20th century. The aim is to return the building to its original state from the end of the 19th century when it served as a marketplace for people living in the Old Town. Accordingly, it will be restored to the original architectural concept of a basilica hall of considerable dimensions, full of market stalls. Aside from the stalls, there will be two catering facilities which, in addition to selling products, can provide customers with opportunities to taste and consume them. The renovation and subsequent operation of the building will be provided through a concession agreement.

Among the co-exhibitors´ projects, it is worthy of mention the Central Business District – a project of the future revitalization of the Masaryk Station in Prague centre. With this project, Prague has an opportunity to boast a piece of work by Zaha Hadid, a world-famous British architect. It is one of the last projects she was personally involved in before she died. The revitalization of the Masaryk Station area will be carried out in several stages by the development company Penta Investments. The area of the present brownfield will open to the public and the neglected area will be gradually revived thanks to new offices, shops, restaurants, cafés, and public green areas.
