Hungary could adopt euro by end of decade

15 September 2016

Hungary could adopt the euro by the end of the decade if certain criteria imposed by the European Union are met, according to the Minister of Economy Mihály Varga. The country’s economic trends need to continue to improve and the forint needs to become more stable, Varga said. The country’s debt needs to fall below 50 percent of GDP before the euro can be introduced, said György Matolcsy, head of the Hungarian central bank.
