The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) has applied for two permits from the South Florida Water Management District to start construction on the first piece of its $1.8 billion south terminal. The new terminal is part of the airport’s $3.1 billion capital improvements program that will boost its capacity by 10 million more passengers. The 16-gate terminal will feature a dining, shopping and entertainment area, including a giant glass window overlooking the runways. The terminal’s new security checkpoint area will process up to 1,750 customers per hour upon opening and can be expanded in the future. Construction on the new south terminal is set to begin in May, with completion expected in 2018.
