UK Firms Fear a Skills Shortage

19 July 2016

According to a survey of 500 employers, 69% of businesses have agreed that they are concerned that there will be a lack of highly skilled workers in the UK. The analysis showed that the majority of businesses will see an increase in skilled jobs but they have their doubts about whether they will be able to fill these new jobs if talent is to be pooled only from domestic sources. The research for this survey was done prior to the Brexit vote but even so this fear has increased amongst a number of employers after the referendum. There are claims that skilled European workers will no longer see Britain as an attractive destination for employment and be limited to enter the country. The study was led by CBI/Pearson Education and Skills surveyed businesses across all regions and sectors in the UK.
