Private home short-term rentals in Portugal hit 25,000Nearly 25,000 homes are currently being leased for tourism, according to the Tourism Board of Portugal, which claims it’s the highest the number has ever risen. Growing numbers of foreign visitors to the country has driven the increasing use of homes in this way, but it’s also pushed the Ministry of Economy into modifying the legislation that governs the practice. The ministry is now formulating a tourism strategy for the coming decade and will be seeking the views and contributions from companies, institutions and citizens. Luis Araujo, president of the Tourism of Portugal, said the goal is to make the country more competitive. In terms of the use of local accommodations, the ministry will be seeking ways to ensure that they can be fully integrated “in the context of the neighborhood and the authenticity of destinations.”
