Lisbon in Rockefeller’s final 100 resilient cities listing

30 May 2016

The Rockefeller Foundation announced that the final 37 more cities have been accepted to its challenged called 100 Resilient cities, among which Lisbon is the only Portuguese city. A team assembled the Rockefeller Foundation reviewed over 1,000 applications in its search for cities led by innovative mayors, a history of working effectively with a range of stakeholders and a recent catalyst for change. The challenges faced by each of the cities are unique, with Lisbon listed as the oldest Western European city in the listing. It will have to deal with ageing buildings and infrastructure while finding ways to reduce the risk of seismic activity, along with flood and landslide risks. Membership in the grouping means access to funding for a chief resilience officer who can help the city to formulate a strategy to address long-term risks and implement coping mechanisms. The network of cities should also benefit from the exchange and sharing of experiences and peer-to-peer knowledge, which should result in partnerships and joint solutions.
