Thirty public squares will be renovated in Lisbon in the coming months under a new city-led investment designed to improve the urban landscape. Work will begin in June on on República and Fontes Pereira de Melo avenues and also on Santos square and Graça square. Along with improving the squares physically, the investments call for the creation of green spaces and bike paths. The work will cost €7.5m and will take 9 months to complete. In Santos and Graça squares will see improvements and changes to the parking system, the installation of sitting areas, improve the level of tree cover and enhance lighting. The “A square in every neighborhood” program was launched in May 2014 to improve the quality of public space in the city by prioritizing pedestrian access at the expense of motor traffic.
