Ukraine oligarchs holding on to land holdings in Crimea

1 April 2016

Ukranian oligarchs are still listed as the largest property owners along the southern coast of Crimea as they have so far managed to avoid nationalization. Three of the largest plots totalling 4.7 hectares in Simeiz are owned by the Ukrainian investment company Sports Tour. The company is allegedly linked to the former head of President Leonid Kuchma’s administration, Viktor Medvedchuk who is a staunch opponent of EU accession. Vladimir Putin is also the godfather of his daughter.
Another 2.6 hectares of land in Gaspra are owned by the company Ukrkapital, which is thought to have connections to a Medvedchuk charity. The largest territory is a 3.9 hectare plot in Parkovoe which are registered for the Ukrainian company Invest. According to RBC, it belongs to the Donetsk businessman Rinat Akhmetov, who tops the Forbes wealthiest persons list for Ukraine with a reported fortune of $6.9bil. Few Ukranian oligarchs have ended up losing land following the Russian occupation except for Igor Kolomoisky and Sergei Taruta.
