While it hasn’t yet secured EU funds for investment, the president of the Alenquer council, Pedro Folgado, says the city will be focusing on urban renewal in the town. A total of €7m has been earmarked for urban regeneration and the creation of redevelopment zones and industrial areas, the improvement of markets, improvements to the pedestrian network, the creation of bike lanes and the construction of the Green Urban Park of Carregado. The city also intends plans to invest €4m to improve the surrounding villages, creating business areas, reclassifying the road network and public spaces, creating green parks and bike paths. The president wants also to focus on tourism, intending to create tourist itineraries and to develop museums. By 2020, the municipality also wants to have an industrial hub and competitive logistics. Along with creating spaces for companies Merceana, Carregado and Alenquer, there are also plans to to rehabilitate schools in these municipalities. The Town Hall of Alenquer will be applying for EU funds to implement the project.
