Portuguese media buildings being sold to hotel developers

29 February 2016

The Lisbon Citizenship Forum (Fórum Cidadania Lx) spoke out against the possibility of reconstruction the Diário de Notícias newspaper headquarters on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon as a hotel. The newspaper has been located at the building since 1940, however, the paper’s owner, Global Media Group, stands to make as much as €25m from the sale. It would add this to the €10m it’s making from the sale of the Jornal de Noticias headquarters building in Porto. Progress on the project, however, comes under the control of the General Direction of Cultural Heritage. Old media buildings have become a target of hotel developers, with the building that houses Renascença Radio in Chiado having recently been sold to make way for a 94 room hotel. The Diário de Notícias building was designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro for which its received the Valmore Prize in 1940.
