With new low-cost airlines now flying to the Azores, the hotel business in the region has seen increased business, with momentum growing in the last month of 2015, when the number of overnight stays increased 50 percent. The growth rate for the year was 19.6 percent, while the increase in overnight stays was 6.7 percent.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), hotels in the Azores recorded 1.27 million overnight stays last year. The number of British tourists grew 8.7 percent, while Spanish tourist traffic grew, albeit at a slower rate (just 3.2 percent). German tourists spent 10.7 percent more nights in the region, while French guests were up 11.4 percent.
