Camões Theater owes €8.5m in unpaid rent

11 February 2016

The rent for the Camões Theater, which is managed by the National Ballet company, has not been paid since 2012. At €180,000 per month, the total amount of back rent due for the state-owned building comes to €8.5m. The theater was completed in 1998 as part of Expo 98. The Correio da Manhã newspaper is reporting that given the ownership structure of the building, the rent should have been collected by the Ministry of Culture. “The ministry acknowledges the debt,” said the press secretary of The Ministry of Culture’s Horácio César but he added that despite having been allocated the funds for the payment, the money had not been received. ”Actually, it is the state that owes the state,” he said.
