Portugal’s government promises to tourism project in Loulé with “caution”

11 February 2016

The Portuguese government will follow with “caution” the development of a tourist resort in Vale do Freixo, Loulé (Algarve), said the Secretary of State for Land and Nature Conservation Planning, Célia Ramos. The Bloco de Esquerda (The Left Bloc party) has voiced concerns about this project because the capital for the investment originates in Kuwait, and will cover 380 hectares, including two hotels, eight tourist villages, a total of 1,700 beds and a golf course. “It is planned in a protected area and will have a direct effect on several protected habitats and species,” said Left Bloc representative João Vasconcelos. He said the project would be “very close” to other projects that needed 20 years to overcome the complaints of environmental associations.
