Estonian architects back tunnel scheme to Helsinki

29 January 2016

There’s been considerable skepticism over plans to build a tunnel under the Gulf of Finland to connect the cities of Helsinki and Tallin, but public sentiment may be shifting. The Estonian Architects Association recently came out in favor of the project, which it’s estimated could cost as much as €13bn. “I can not see any other method to increase this region’s competitiveness than a tunnel to Helsinki,” said Indrek Allmann, chairman of the Estonian Architects Association. “It is a mistake to see this as a project between Tallinn and Helsinki,” he said. “It is a project between Finland and Estonia, but in particular an EU project.” As it’s currently being conceived, the tunnel would stretch to around 50 kilometers, potentially exceeding the tunnel connecting England and France. The tunnel would be connected via the other Baltic nations and Poland to the German railway network. If plans were to proceed smoothly, completion could take place in 2030.
