With the completion of the Old Bridge under its belt, the city of Bratislava wants to start construction of tram track to the Petržalka district. This would re-establish a modern rail connection between Petržalka and the Old town and the rest of the city. The tracks must be completed before 2020 in order to allow the city tap EU funds. The project is now undergoing an EIA study.
It was originally planned to build a road along the tracks, but local citizens came together to force the city to build bike paths instead. The city also plans to create a Central development zone in Petržalka – a green strip through Petržalka along the Chorvátske river branch that residents could use for relaxation and sport, plus space for new shops, services and cultural amenities.
