€200m investment planned for Krsko nuclear plant

20 November 2015

The Croatian Economy Minister Ivan Vrdoljak announced that the country would be spending roughly €200m on a dry storage facility for waste from the Krsko nuclear power plant. The facility is located in Slovenia but is co-owned by Slovenia and Croatia.
Minister Ivan Vrdoljak said that Croatia “will do everything so that Croatian companies enjoy the most proportionate share possible in that investment, in accordance with ownership and management rights,”.

The plant’s maintenance and investment projects cost the two countries €240m between 2012- 2014. Croatian companies control just a 20 percent stake in the plant, compared to Slovenia’s 63 percent, driving fears they will be overlooked in the construction of the planned waste facility. New work over the summer has extended the plant’s lifespan by an additional 20 years.
