Moldova revokes bank licenses over billion euro scandal

20 October 2015

Moldova’s central bank (BNM) has revoked the licences of Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala and Unibank, after a total of €880m went missing in November 2014. All customer deposits at the three banks have already been transferred to other local banks, according to the central bank.

The BNM board is also forcing the liquidation of the three banks.

The move follows an investigation of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, suspected of corruption and complicity in the bank fraud.
