Hungary expands “Come home, youth!” program

20 August 2015

Despite weak results, Mihály Varga, Hungary’s national economy minister, plans to expand funding for the government’s “Come home, youth!” program, which aims to persuade young Hungarian expats to return to the country. Varga wants to expand funding beyond the budgeted HUF 100m. The program offers work to young Hungarians living abroad, covers the cost of their plane ticket home and pays them a stipend of HUF 100,000 a month for a year. So far, more than 2,000 have registered to access job listings on the website, and 177 have applied to join the program, of which the government has already put 170 in touch with potential employers. The government has signed cooperation agreements with 50 companies based in Hungary which have agreed to participate in the program.
