EU suspends Hungarian state aid for Audi

9 January 2015

HUF 40bn in state aid to the Hungarian unit of Audi has been suspended, according to the weekly HVG. It reports that Budapest had told Brussels it would be providing Audi just over HUF 11bn in state support for the construction of a new automobile plant, but that the figure had quietly quadrupled. It also hinted that the cost of the project had increased after the funding was made available. In July 2014, the European Commission launched an investigation into the funding of Audi based on concerns that it could hurt the competitive environment. The €1.2bn project was expected to create 2,100 jobs.
