UK car sales up 5.6% in September

8 October 2014

New car sales in the UK increased by 5.6 percent y-o-y in September, hitting 425,861, according to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This has been the industry’s 31st consecutive monthly increase and its strongest September performance in 10 years. Nearly 2 million new cars have been sold on the UK market this year, up 9.1 percent from 2013, according to the figures. The Ford Fiesta was the top-selling car on the UK market, SMMT writes, followed by the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Corsa.

“September’s strong performance underlined the continuing robustness of the UK new car market, particularly in the context of last September’s bumper volumes,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT’s chief executive. Demand “has been boosted by intensifying confidence in the UK economy, with consumers attracted by a wide range of exciting, increasingly fuel-efficient, new cars.”
