Ahold to offload five Czech supermarkets

4 August 2014

Interspar stores in the Czech Republic will be rebranded into Albert markets over the next 18 months. The supermarkets will be rebranded by the end of this year, while the hypermarkets will be changed in 2015. Ahold’s takeover of Spar’s Czech network was finalized at the end of last week. The company will invest €51m into the rebranding, writes the server idnes.cz.

The Antimonopoly Office ruled that Ahold must offload a total of five Albert and Interspar stores in Česká Lípa, Litoměřice, Tábor and Třebíč. The food retailer is currently looking for buyers and is considering how best to use two Spar warehouses. The takeover will increase Ahold’s revenues by up to 30 percent and will create the second leading food retailer on the Czech market, behind Schwarz, which operates Lidl and Kaufland supermarkets.
