Defence ministry opens bidding on Karlín barracks

4 July 2014

The Czech Ministry of Defense is still trying to offload the historical barracks in Karlín-Prague 8. The ministry has increased the asking price by CZK 40m in the second tender, with bidding starting at CZK 620.2m. Companies have until mid-July to submit a bid.

Ivana Tykač, owner of Griva Art, the company which won the first tender, does not plan to bid again, saying the new asking price is too high. Tykač, who wanted to build a university campus at the site, offered CZK 589m in the the first tender. The minimum price was CZK 581m. Tykač told the server idnes.cz that the current asking price does not make sense to her economically. She also pointed to an extremely complicated and prolonged permitting process, in which the developer will have to get approval from three ministries. The complex is currently zoned for military use, which means that changes to the master plan will be necessary.
