Roubini: Hungary moving towards state capitalism

5 June 2014

Speaking at a conference in Budapest, the well-known economist Nouriel Roubini warned that Hungary was leading the CEE pack in a trend towards state capitalism. The strategy is a double-edged sword, he claims. On the one hand, the country is now less vulnerable in some ways, and has even been showing signs of growth. However, he touched on a sensitive issue when he called the government’s approach to non-Hungarian business owners “mixed” and asking how firm its commitment was to foreign investment. Reporting on the speech, portfoliol.hu writes that Roubini urged CEE countries to make sure they were ready for euro adoption before going through with it. Failure to do so could harm not only the countries themselves, but the euro zone as well.
