Polish construction output fell 40% in 2013

19 March 2014

Polish construction output fell by 40 percent last year, according to the National Statistical Office (GUS), cooling hopes that recovery could be on the way for the troubled sector. The outlook for 2014 doesn’t look much better, with only 12 percent of builders reporting signs of improvement on the construction market, according to GUS. Meanwhile, 30 percent claim the situation hasn’t changed. A total of 23,708 flats was delivered to the Polish market during the first two months of the year, a 5-percent drop year-on-year. Many local companies say they don’t expect to see any improvement until 2015.

Jan Styliński from the Polish Association of Construction Employers (PZPB) blames the decrease in output on poor weather conditions. “During the winter, the sector produces no orders, which causes stagnation,” Styliński told the Newseria Biznes website, adding, however, that he expects to see more orders in the sector in the coming months.
