Czechs to support EU measures regarding Ukraine

21 February 2014

The Czech government will support EU measures regarding the escalating situation in Ukraine, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said. Sobotka’s remarks came after he met with the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz this week. “The Czech government is also concerned about the developments in Ukraine, mainly the escalation of violence in the past few days,” said Sobotka. “The Czech Republic is prepared to support the EU’s joint, united and resolute steps in relation to the Ukrainian government.” Barroso is also calling for all parties in the conflict to stop the violence.

Meanwhile, Barroso welcomed the new Czech government’s more open approach towards the EU and joining the fiscal pact. The EC president said that the Czech Republic seems set on becoming a more active and constructive member of the European family.
