Hungary’s National Development Ministry started negotiating with several parties to discuss plans to build an electronic toll system for vehicles that are more than 3.5 tons. The amount of tolls under the new system will be determined by distance traveled, unlike the current system which is based upon time. The ministry wants to divide the job among those companies that participated in the tender last month.
Dutch information and communications technology company Getronics won the e-toll tender but abruptly withdrew, citing pressure from a competitor. The e-toll system must start operating by July 1, according to a government mandate. The budget has budgeted HUF 75bn for the system in the second half of the year.
