The Czech Republic is poised to veto the EU’s 2014-20 budget proposal. “I’m coming to Brussels for talks on the multi-year financial framework with a strong and unequivocal mandate from the Czech government,” Prime Minister Petr Nečas was quoted as saying in a ČTK report. “We find this proposal unacceptable, and we are ready to use a veto.” Nečas arrived for a summit in Brussels on Thursday.
“We are seeking a smaller and more modern European budget, a budget that will be fair to the Czech Republic,” added Nečas, who is known for supporting strict austerity measures when necessary. Nečas said he thinks the EU is unfair to the Czech Republic, explaining that he wanted the new budget to provide funding for development in poorer Czech regions.
