Czech PM demands investigation into solar subsidies

6 February 2013

Czech Prime Minister Petr Nečas wants to look for ways of eliminating the excessive impact on electricity prices caused by financial support for renewable sources of energy. Nečas told the press he would work on it together with the Ministers of Finance and Industry and with the energy market regulatory board on the matter.
But he added that there are suspicions that staff in the Czech Regulatory Office may have acted illegally when setting the purchasing prices for power from photovoltaic plants.
Nečas claimed his government first dealt the problems caused by subsidized photovoltaics in 2010. “The fact that no steps had been taken in the matter until then is punishable,” Nečas said. An internal audit at the ERU showed that purchasing prices of solar electricity were not set according to the limits provided for in Czech legislation. The ERU has turned to the public prosecutor’s office to investigate the matter.
