Budapest’s Eötvös Lorand University, one of the most prestigious and oldest Hungarian universities, is claiming that Hungarian Deputy Minister Zsolt Semjen’s post-graduate thesis has serious professional-ethical faults. The thesis was written in 1992 in sociology, and, according to the university’s dean Katalin Tausz, there are “very significant similarities” between the thesis of Zsolt Semjen and another work.
The university, however, said it does not plan to investigate further. Semjen said that since the university does not plan to take any additional steps, he considers the case to be “officially and definitely” closed. This is not the first academic scandal to plague Hungarian politicians this year. In April, Pál Schmitt resigned as president after experts said that most of his doctoral thesis was copied from other authors.
