EU vote on shale gas extraction could impact Polish business

21 November 2012

The European Parliament is scheduled to vote on two shale gas extraction proposals today. The first proposal, presented by Niki Tzaveli, a member of the Greek parliament, concerns issues involved in the production and use of shale gas deposits across the European region. The other proposal from the Polish lawmaker Bogusław Sonik surrounds the environmental impact of shale gas extraction.
According to Polish media reports, some politicians are proposing significant amendments to Sonik’s proposal which could impact the shale gas business in Poland. The amendments would prohibit the so-called “hydraulic fracturing” method in the extraction process of both shale gas and conventional reservoirs.
The Polish gas giant PGNiG currently holds 15 shale gas concessions across the country.
