Czech PM set to survive confidence vote

7 November 2012

The embattled Czech PM Petr Necas looks to have emerged victorious in his recent grappling with rebels within his own party. His government was set for a vote of confidence today over proposed austerity measures, along with tax hikes, designed to keep the country on a sound fiscal path. There’s considerable concern that continued austerity is hurting the economy’s chance of pulling out of recession.
In addition, the coalition government’s popularity has been slipping sharply in recent polls, making its members increasingly anxious about taking painful, unpopular decisions. Necas is now expected to win the vote of confidence, which will come via a vote on the proposed budget package.
