6 November 2012

Hungary is building a laser research center in the city of Szeged. The center is part of a massive EU project called Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI), involving 40 research and academic institutions from 13 European countries. In addition to Szeged, which is home to one of Hungary’s most distinguished universities, two other laser centers will be going up in Prague and Bucharest.
The project’s preparatory work was done between 2008 and 2010. For the first phase of the project, Hungary received HUF 47bn. The country will receive another HUF 14bn for the second phase to be completed in 2015.
