Police accuses Brno Court Chairman over overpriced construction of Justice Palace

2 November 2012

Police accused the Brno regional Court chairman Jaromír Pořízek because of the overpriced construction of the Brno Palace of Justice. The Ministry of Justice allowed the project’s budget to soar from the originally planned CZK 805m to CZK 1.6bn. In fact, it’s believed that the final costs amounted to more like 1.938bn.
Pořízek, who was responsible for the construction, has repeatedly denied having made any mistakes in the project, which was completed in 2009. Along with the impending police investigation, the Czech Financial Office ordered the Brno Regional Court to pay an astronomical penalty of CZK 1.935bn for agreeing to a contract that was not in accordance with the original tender. This fine has since been reduced to just CZK 500m, but nothing has actually been paid yet. The case was handed over to the Regional State Attorney Office in Ostrava.
