Czech regional elections test public mood

12 October 2012

Two days of elections are currently underway in the Czech Republic that will determine if the Social Democrats (CSSD) retain their control over regional governments, and which could also shift the balance of power in the Senate in their direction. The party is hoping today’s elections prove to be a stepping stone back to power, calling them a referendum on the future of the center-right coalition government.
ČSSD excelled in the last regional elections across the country, taking power everywhere except for Prague, where it was replaced by right-of-center ODS governors. ODS has based its pre-election campaign on criticism of the regions’ financial management, as well as corruption scandals connected with EU funds.
