Spa status bans high-rise construction in Karlovy Vary

5 September 2012

Karlovy Vary and other spa towns in the Czech Republic should be better protected against inappropriate development, under new rules governing spa towns. The new rules replace an old set of rules from 1956, which no longer meets current needs of spa protection. “After the new status is approved, it should no longer happen that someone will build unsuitable projects in the town, such as the Imperial Hotel’s parking garage,” deputy mayor Jiří Klsák said to ČTK.
Under the new regime, no high-rises, noisy industrial facilities, garages or motorways can emerge in the inner territory of spa zones, cars are not allowed into the colonnades and greenery will be protected. The Health Ministry can impose fines for breaches of rules of up to five million crowns.
