Romanian president returns to duties

29 August 2012

Romania’s former ex-president Traian Basescu returned to power on Tuesday after a ceremony in which his political enemies were asked to attend for the sake of the country’s international image. Investors had been shaken by an increasingly delicate looking situation, as the country’s prime minister claimed to be fed up with what he called Basescu’s meddling in politics far beyond his constitutional duties.
Basescu’s ouster was the subject of a nationwide referendum in July. The vast majority of those voting agreed with his removal, but less than 50 percent of all registered voters turned out. The country’s high court ruled that the lack of a quorum made the referendum invalid and ordered that the president therefor be re-instated.
