The Polish State Railways (PKP) said it was surprised by news in August that its former subsidiary PNI (Przedsiębiorstwa Napraw Infrastruktury) had gone bankrupt. PKP sold the company to the Polish construction giant Budimex last November, but the company subsequently collapsed. “At the time of sale to Budimex, the company was in very good shape financially,” PKP wrote in an official statement, adding that PNI had sufficient projects under contract to secure its future. It insists that any decision to file for bankruptcy would have been taken only after its sale to Budimex. “Any decision of this type is based on assessments of the company’s current condition, of which PKP has no knowledge since the sale.”
