Romanian use of cash is declining, figures show, as they increased the amount they spent using cards by 22 percent over the first six months of 2012. That made for a total of RON 10.4m (€2.4bn). And they’re not afraid to use them overseas, as one-fifth of that total were made at stores abroad, according to data from the country’s Central Bank.
The volume of payments abroad with cards issued by local banks exceeded RON 2.2bn in the first six months, up 19 percent compared with January to June in 2011.
Of course, ATM cash withdrawals also rose 10 percent to RON 51.4bn (€11.7bn). The majority of withdrawals happened at local ATMs.
